यह उपन्यास मुख्य रूप से भारत के केरल राज्य में स्थित एक ईसाई परिवार की कहानी है, जिसमें सामाजिक भेदभाव, जातिवाद, प्रेम, परिवार और राजनीति जैसे विषयों को गहराई से छुआ गया है। इसमें दो जुड़वां भाई-बहनों एस्था और राहेल की ज़िंदगी और उनके बचपन में हुए एक दुखद हादसे का वर्णन किया गया है, जो पूरे परिवार की नियति को बदल देता है।
